Alright:
I haven't read through this entire thing yet, but here's the reason for all the news about the pope:
In 1978, Pope John Paul was elected, and died 30 days later. A cardinal from Poland was elected, Pope John Paul II as a "quick fix" so that a "real pope" could be found. To the surprise of everyone, Pope John Paul II held the papacy for 26 years.
He is the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, the youngest pope since 1846 (he was 57 years-old when elected), made the most travels of any pope in history (17 visits total to the U.S.). He was shot in an attempted assassination in 1980, and survived, was the first pope to visit Cuba, and helped create some sort of understanding between denominations and faiths.
Among the other things he has done, as well as being the head of the largest church in the world, this has made Pope John Paul II one of the most important people on the face of this earth.
He will be sadly missed by many.

wow, that is an amazing life story, not being sarcastic. anyway, we have friends who are catholic and so they're spending 9 days in mourning, going to mass at noon and 7 for those 9 days and aren't allowed to take part in any 'joyful activities'. i was like, wow, all because ur religios leader died, but hey, i know i wouldn't be able to do it.

Spoonie, there are just certain things that I feel need to be made very clear as to why they happen.
