My shucky darn dang psychiatrist has me marked as bipolar now >.< she said she 'diagnosed' it to me last time I saw her. I'm upset because I didn't want that label, and now...gah.
I also stopped taking my meds randomly three weeks ago and everything was fine, I kept taking my lamictal up to a week ago though. And she said at my appointment that the medication was helping and working and stuff. I don't know what to believe >.< I do not, and refuse, to be on meds the rest of my life, but what she said made sense @_@ But I shouldn't be relying on my meds to make me happy. But...what if I do need meds to be happy, chipper, and better off? Are they so bad if they help me feel better? I'm so confusedddd...

see, that's the thing i hate about psychiatrists! They don't know ANYTHING. Hun, you AREN'T bipolar. To be bipolar you have to have extreme mood swings. You have normal ones. Not to mention, you don't treat bipolar with anti-depressents. There's a reason i've said go to a psychologist first. They actually studied psychology. Honestly, i have studied more psychology at this point in my life than a psychiatrist has in their entire career. A psychiatrist is a doctor who has taken a few psych courses...they know JACK **** that's why everyone hates them. Most of my friends that wanted to grab some adderall to help them study went to a psych and in 10 minutes were diagnosed with ADD and put on Adderall. It took my psychologist 6 MONTHS to diagnose me...with mere ADHD
Not to mention you aren't supposed to rely on meds for the rest of your life. Psychologists around the world laugh their ass off at american because we're like, "OMFG I HAD A SLIGHT MOOD SWING! GOTTA GO GET ON PROZAC FOR THE NEXT 25 YEARS!!!!" Any psychiatric medicine is aimed toward relieving symptoms for a short period of time, namely 2 to 3 years at most. Like adderall, it's supposed to help me not fail out of school while i learn to manage my ADHD, something i will be learning how to do and dealing with for a long time, because i have the attention span of a peanut. But if any psychiatrist ever even mentions anything related to being on meds for the rest of your life, get up and walk out and never go back, because they're just doing it for the money. Seriously. Why do you think psychiatrists give out medicine like candy? They get commission off of it!
<---gets pissed off at psych's
Honestly, the right way to do therapy in any situation is do talk therapy with a PSYCHOLOGIST and if the PSYCHOLOGIST recommends you go see a PSYCHIATRIST, THEN you should go. Even though i'm kind of a hypocrite because the second Dr. Bird mentioned psychiatrist i never saw her again. Seriously, that's when i switched to Kevin XD. But even he said he may have me go see a psychiatrist @_@

It's not that the meds make you happy, but help release natural chemicals in your brain that make you happy. That's how I always saw it, at least.
And don't worry too much about being diagnosed bipolar. It's nothing you chose to be. It's not like you have to wear an bipolar warning sign when you go out in public. =P
Much love, Jen. <3<3<3
Edit- Now that I've read Dakota's post, you don't think there's a possibility you have bipolar disorder?

eh, I dunno >.< *bangs head on wall* my counselor suggested I go see a psychiatrist. I might talk to my mom tonight and see if she can not send the perscription in for my lamictal for awhile and see what happens. I dunno. But yea, I realize that they give them out for the money and crap. And I refuse to be on life-long meds. And I honestly am not sure. Yea, I have mood swings, but they're more sudden and short, not fullblown ones for weeks at a time. But I can't change what she's done can I? Maybe I'll just stop seeing her, it'd save money.
heh, I should make a shirt "BEWARE: bipolar child inside" XD

Not to mention, you don't treat bipolar with anti-depressents. They were trying to use Prozac to regulate my dads BPD and it really really screwed him up...more...so yeah. There's even a warning on it that says "Not for use in patients with BPD". >_<

Anti-depressants work for migrane headaches too!
And I was talking to Jen, but I'm not complaining about hearing your side of it either. I was in therapy with the psychologist working on a diagnosis of BPD (heh, someone who wouldn't diagnose me overnight. ++) but I just stopped going. I really don't think I'm bipolar.

precisely why i would suggest going to a psychologist for a second opinion.
If you don't want to spend extra money and are all ready on medication, i would suggest taking a break from the psychiatrist and going to see a psychologist for a while. tell her that your psychiatrist has diagnosed you with BPD and you would like an honest second opinion. I honestly believe that a little extra money isn't that big of a deal when dealing with...you know...mental illness. If someone diagnosed you with breast cancer, i'm sure you'd want a second opinion.
