What do you think of today's media and the effect it has on young people, and even adults? All the trash and violence in movies, music, ect. There are so many drugs out there now, and the suicide rate is so high. Do you think the media could be the cause for all this? I think it influences teens VERY easily. They want to be like the people they see on tv. And if those people aren't making good choices, they aren't very healthy influences on teens.

Dumb kids shouldn't watch TV.
Seriously, you can't blame everything on the media...sure they suck, and sure TV is a brain-cell sucking waste of time, but the only people I could think of that would really let a TV show influence them that much is someone who is very mentally unstable. And even then, that's their mental unstability, not the TV show itself. Chances are, if one was going to commit suicide, they would do it whether they watched a show on TV or not.

People choose what they want to watch; just because something innocuous and g-rated comes on or a movie about sex and drugs comes out doesn't mean that people will automatically watch them simply because they are on. The effect of watching miscellaneous shows, whether good or bad, is generally minimal anyway. Watching "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" will not make me into a "bad" person any more than watching "My Three Sons" or some other supposedly wholesome show will automatically turn me into a good person.
Also, the media sells what people want to see; if there are lots of shows about drugs or violence, it's because people want to see them. If no one wanted to see them, no one would watch them, and the tv shows or movies that had them would go out of business.
So, in summary, the society affects what the media shows, not the other way around.

>.< I did some naughty things at a very early age because I saw it on tv and thought it was cool. *shudder*
No one ever told me that it's media, not real life. Stupid kids shouldn't ewatch tv.

ahaha, jamers you post stealer. I was gonna post something like this on s16 the other day while jamers was sitting next to me...but I'll tell you what I think on this. It's not just teenagers and it's not just movies. Disney and Pixar movies, and ESPECIALLY Looney Tunes cartoons throw in some adult humor and some things that wouldn't be in G rated shows or movies today. I think that our society is pressuring young girls to grow up WAY too fast. Go to clothing stores and look around in the kids' and the toddlers' departments. Some of the little girls clothes look like things a streetwalker would wear! My neighbor was telling us she went into a Gordman's store once, and saw (in the really little girls department) halter tops that had padding in them sewn flat on the back and round on the front so that when the girls would put them on, it looked like they had boobs! I don't think girls wearing sizes like 2T and 3T are quite old enough to dress like that. If I think of more on this subject I'll post again.

True, but they could still be influenced. Shows like CSI and NCIS have murder mysteries, and tell or show how so-and-so killed themself or someone else, and that could give them ideas. And your right, you can't blame everything on the media, but I do think it has a big impact. Dumb kids shouldn't watch TV. Seriously, you can't blame everything on the media...sure they suck, and sure TV is a brain-cell sucking waste of time, but the only people I could think of that would really let a TV show influence them that much is someone who is very mentally unstable. I think the media has a massive impact on people, but in a different way. All the advertising is the issue, more than violence and negative behaviors. And that's not society's influence so much; it's just that advertisers know how to attract basic human instincts to sell what they're selling. And now they've gotten amazingly manipulative and appeal to emotions and train us. we're very much a "ending is better than mending" society; we always want more; what we have is never good enough. And that affects all aspects of our lives: the way we want to look, to dress, to drive, to eat, to habitate, etc.
And you can't just say it's easily influenced people that get it, because most of us get at least some exposure since infancy, innoculating us before we even have a choice. We've been trained since birth to be dissatisfied and desire more, because it's an intensely consumerist society.
And I DO think violence and such in movies is very desensitizing, which isn't very good. It won't make anyone go out and hurt someone else, usually, but it does eventually make it more acceptable and less shocking. I'm a good example; last time I flinched at something were the eels...

any teen that tries to be like their 'favorite' person on TV is retarded to begin with. Secondly, entertainment is entertainment. Back in old days in Rome people watched people kill each other in real life, for sport. So what's so different now? If you understand the difference between fantasy and real life, then it's okay. I do drugs because i want to, TV has had no effect on me. I run people over with cars in GTA3/GTAVice City, and do you see me jumping in my car and running people over for sport? Nope...
ditto. If you look at the majority of people that commit suicide, it's due to some form of abuse or a mental illness or a few other factors. Not the media. Honestly if someone screams "KILL URSELF! SWEEEEET!" are you gonna do it? Most people blame the media because they don't want to take the time to look at people's lives to figure out what went wrong. People, including my parents, have blamed my behavior on the amount of violence and crap i watch on TV, the video games i play bla bla bla. Well, my therapist looked further. You know what she found? Anger and depression from the suicide of my girlfriend. Abuse from my parents. Years of being discriminated against. I lost control from these factors, not from watching Jurassic Park at the age of 6....
